In 1886 Albert Einstein began his school career in Munich, Germany. He studied mathematics, in particular, calculus. In 1895 Einstein failed an exam, which would have allowed him to become an electrical engineer at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zurich. Upon the failure of the entrance exam to the ETH, Einstein attended a secondary school at Aarau planning to use this route to enter the ETH in Zurich. By 1901 he had a temporary job teaching mathematics at a Technical High School in Winterthur. In 1905, Einstein earned a doctorate from the University of Zurich for his thesis On a new determination of molecular dimensions.
Discussion
In the first of three pages, all written in 1905, Einstein examined the discovery of Max Planck, according to which electromagnetic energy seemed to be emitted from radiating objects in discrete quantities. The energy of these quanta was directly proportional to the frequency of the radiation. Einstein used Planck’s quantum hypothesis to describe the electromagnetic radiation of light.
Einstein’s second paper proposed what is today called the Special Theory of Relativity. He based his theory on a reinterpretation of the original principle of relativity; namely, the laws of physics had to have the same form in any frame of reference. As a second basic hypothesis, Einstein assumed that the speed of light remained constant in all frames of reference.
Later in 1905, Einstein showed how mass and energy were equivalents. Einstein wasn’t the first to propose all the components of the Special Theory of Relativity. His contribution helped unify important parts of the classical mechanics and Maxwell’s electrodynamics.
For Einstein’s third paper, he examined statistical mechanics, a field that has been studied by Ludwig Boltzmann and Josiah Gibbs.
After 1905 Einstein made more important contributions to the quantum theory, but his intent was to extend the Special Theory of Relativity involving acceleration. In 1907 the key appeared with the principle of equivalence, in which gravitational acceleration was held to be indistinguishable from acceleration caused by mechanical forces. Gravitational mass was therefore identical with inertial mass.
Einstein in 1908 became a lecturer at the University of Bern after he submitted his Habilitation thesis Consequences for the constitution of radiation following from the energy distribution law of black bodies. The following year he became a professor of physics at the University of Zurich. By 1909 Einstein was recognized as a leading scientific thinker. In 1911 he was appointed a full professor at the Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague. In Prague proved to be a very significant year for Einstein. He predicted how a ray of light from a distant star, passing near the Sun, would appear to be bent slightly, in the direction of the sun. This showed the first experimental evidence of Einstein’s Theory.

Einstein in 1912 began a new phase of his gravitational research, with help from his friend Marcel Grossmann. They used terms of the tensor calculus of Tullio Levi-Civita and Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro. Einstein called his new work the General Theory of Relativity.
In 1921 Einstein moved to Princeton, New Jersey, USA. While in Princeton Einstein received the Nobel Prize for his work on the photoelectric effect. He made his last major scientific discovery on the association of waves with the matter in 1924. Other honors Einstein received were the Copley Medal of the Royal Society in 1925; Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1926, AMS Gibbs Lecturer in 1934 and a crater was named after him. While at Princeton he worked to unify the laws of physics. But the problems were too great for his aging mind. Einstein promoted Zionism, pacifism and, in a secret 1939 letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the construction of a uranium bomb. Einstein was cremated at Trenton, New Jersey April 18, 1955, the same day he died.
