Personal Analysis of 2 Works of Art
Work of art has been used for a long time to portray different ideas or opinions of the artists on different issues affecting them or the society they live in. Some other works of art were just basically used to bring out the beauty of an area or a person. All over the world, the work of art has gone through some unique periods; however, the main emphasis will be on artwork in Europe.
Renaissance is one of such movements or periods that took over the arts in early 1400,s, the movement which affected both art and literature started in Italy and soon spread to the other parts of Europe. In the end, all the work of art from early 1400 up to the 16th century were referred to as the renaissance period (Cumming, pg. 200).
Numerous scholars from Italy were of the opinion that the quality of artwork had derailed in the past 1000 years. The scholars had great respect and admiration to the work of art from the classical age, so as to revive the glory that artwork had before much time was devoted by the scholars in studying classical literature. The word renaissance actually meant “rebirth or revival”. The works of art from the period were more secular than from the middle ages which were mostly about religion. A new spirit known as humanism had taken over (Cumming, pg. 210).
Renaissance In Florence
About a century even before renaissance came to be some artist had already embraced the spirit of humanism; such an artist was Giotto di Bondone who lived and worked in Florence. Even though Giotto’s paintings were religious the holy persons that he painted were shown to dress in normal clothing and the setting of the paintings was the countryside. From the paintings, most of the people who looked at them were able to view the saints not as supernatural beings but as normal people like them (Fitzpatrick, pg. 200).
First Generation of Renaissance Artists in Florence
After the death of Giotto, the town of Florence became a major center for Renaissance. A group of artists from Florence came together and started experimenting with new procedures; the group was led by an architect known as Filippo Brunelleschi. Filipo was an architect as well as sculptor, but he did well as an architect than a sculptor(Fitzpatrick, pg. 250).
One of the major works done by Filipo was designing a hospital in Florence(Foundling Hospital), he always looked for inspiration from classical architecture. Compared to the work of Ghiberti, who was also another great architect from the period, Brunelleschi’s work had Harmonious proportions (Fitzpatrick pg. 150).
Brunelleschi developed a skill of creating illusions on flat surfaces. He would make objects to appear small as they went further into the background, the technique was known as perspective. Ghiberti’s work, on the other hand, had designs closer to the surface. One of the great works by Ghiberti is the Gates of Paradise done in the year 1435. The name “Gates of Paradise “was given to the work by the people of Florence after seeing the great beauty of the doors. The period also produced other great artists such as Leonardo da Vinci who did a variety of artwork that was related to man or nature. Even though he is known more for his paintings he was also an architect and a sculptor (Fitzpatrick, pg. 250).
Impact
Renaissance period was able to have a very major impact on the work of art and it is still being felt today. The period gave the artist a chance to express themselves in other ways apart from matters related to religion as was the norm. It is from the period that the artist started painting pictures of things such as flowers or any other thing that they found to be worth painting. Artist also started painting the portrait of other people and giving them away as presents. The period also gave rise to the now famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci (Cumming, pg. 230).
The work of art by both Filipino and Ghiberti were very significant to the art world. Filipo’s work which was done in a method known as perspective became a very crucial tool for other artists especially painters. As a result of the invention of work of art done in perspective, many painters were able to produce great works. The skill is still being used by artists in the contemporary world of art and will continue being used in the future (Fitzpatrick, pg. 260).
Conclusion
The work of art will forever remain part and parcel of the human race; most of the works from the renaissance period were able to become very famous. The work of art by the two famous artists might have been meant for two different institutions but the impact they had was magnificent. Filipo’s work was on a hospital while Ghiberti’s work was on a church, but the technique used was the same. From the work of the two artists, it was also evident that the profession of each artist played a major role in the work that the artist did.
