The book by Bill Crow ‘Jazz Anecdotes’ has provided me with information on the difficulties that jazz musicians dealt with when trying to ensure that jazz music was accepted and recognized by people. The book further enabled me to have a better appreciation for the time period when people were not quite accepting of jazz music. It is, however, good to note that currently, many people have accepted this form of music in their lives. Crow ensured that anyone who read the book would be informed about accomplishments associated with this kind of music. It was quite interesting to know about some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians as well as their contributions to this music. I cannot deny the fact that I learned about some key lessons from the lives of jazz musicians. Also, I became aware of the efforts of jazz musicians in promoting their music.
Jazz music
Bill Crow indicated that during the early years of jazz music, the musicians faced many problems as well as challenges. They did not have the opportunity of attending schools whereby they would be taught about jazz music. In turn, I became appreciative of the fact that Garner’s life was quite unique and was not stopped in any way by the existing obstacles. It is no wonder that many lovers of jazz around the world respect and adore him because of what he overcame to become a jazz musician.
Alcoholism is an issue that affected many of the jazz musicians as I came to discover upon reading the book. They believed that by taking alcohol, they would be able to have exceptional performances. To add on, Protestants did not accept the music and in the 1920s they did not want this music to be heard anywhere as it did not help people with anything. It is evident that people did not judge this music fairly as they had already had the wrong perspectives in their minds. The book did a commendable job of ensuring that all these problems were highlighted through the use of perfect examples.
Conclusion
Record producers and club managers were at first skeptical of jazz music and thus did not do anything to promote the music. They did not believe that jazz would appeal to people in a positive manner as compared to other popular music at the time. This issue inspired the jazz musicians to work even harder in order to promote their music as they knew that in the end, they would succeed. It is because of such motivation and hard work that today jazz is popular all over the world. Society will never forget some famous jazz musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong, among others. Indeed, Bill Crow’s book ‘Jazz Anecdotes’ is an interesting read and I recommend it to everyone who loves jazz music.
