This also creates a better picture of the realistic part of fractions as opposed to it being just numbers that the child does not understand. For different types of fractions, there can be the use of different illustrations; for instance, when dealing with continuous fractions there can be the use of representations like a cake, pizza, chocolate bars being shared amongst a given number of children. For discrete fractions, there can be the use of sweets, marbles, and beads. For definite fractions, there can be the use of bars that are divided into parts and shaded.
The concept of using fractions is also linked together with other concepts as it helps in mastering the multiplication table and in identifying the Least Common Multiple (LCM) and the DCM (Abrohms, 1997). This increases familiarity with the concepts and makes it even easier to apply them in other instances as well. Once the basics parts of the fractions have been mastered then the application of decimal points instead of fractions becomes easier as the student will be able to identify the relationship.
Conclusion
Currently, most schools in the state are embracing the new common core standard whereby different schools are expected to teach the same concepts to children from the first grade through to the twelfth grade. This will create some level of uniformity across the board that allows schools to compete on an equal platform. This will make the students be ready for the job market better as they would have all been exposed to the same standards of education in high schools.
The common core standard requires a measurable standard of education that can be easily quantified and are research-based. This is to be able to ensure that what is taught in class has some level of similarity to the everyday life that the children are exposed to daily.
