Discussion

We can say that the book is about the natural world and yet we are rather continuously aware of nature as a prime setting for virtually all the events in the story. We experience the faces of nature in many different forms.  Depending on how much attention we wish to give to this aspect of the story, our encounter with nature in the story can heighten our awareness of certain features of our own experience in the world. The story can provide windows in nature and we can analyze exactly what view of nature we get as we look through those windows.  The book is about intergenerational relation between young people and adults.

We are taken through the action from the point of view of the young, but at any point, we may experience an event from the perspective of Professor or Mr and Mrs Beaver or Mr Tumnus. How the young and the old relationship in the story and the question of what each adds to life are things that the story gets us to ponder and contemplate. The story is all about the good and bad and how the lives of everybody are deeply influenced by the powers to which we are answerable. At some point in the story, power resides in the hands of good characters and at other times, at the hands of evil forces. But in both instances, the importance of power structures in human experience is highlighted by the story.

Most of the chapters of the novel are set in Narnia which land is known to be inhabited by talking animals and other mythical creatures. All the talking animals and the mythical creatures have been ruled by the white witch for over 100 years of strong winter. In the outline of this story, there are four English children who live in a vast old country house during the Second World War mass departure from London. The youngest child among the four makes a visit to Narnia three times through the wardrobe in a separate room.

All these four children walk together on the third visit of the young child to Narnia. This third visit validates the young child’s story and looks at the last 12 chapters. In Narnia, the four children seem to accomplish an ancient prophecy, so they are quickly adventuring both to deliver the country and to save their lives. The author of this book wrote it for and devoted it to his spiritual daughter who is called Lucy Barfield.

In the year 1940, four children who happen to be siblings: Edmund, Lucy Pevensie, Susan and Peter are some of the children who evacuated London during the Second World War to run away from the Blitz. These children are sent up country to go and live with one professor called Digory Kirke. As the siblings are going around the house exploring it, Lucy gets into the wardrobe and there she finds a gateway to a jungle in Narnia. Lucy meets Tumnus the Faun at a lamppost in the centre of the jungle. Tumnus offers Lucy tea at his house and she accepts the offer.

After they have had their tea, Tumnus confesses to Lucy that he intended to deceive her to the white old witch. The white witch has always been the ruler of Narnia and she has always made Narnia experience winter throughout. The witch has given an order that all the sons and daughters of eve be reported or captured. Tumnus does not capture or report Lucy but instead escorts her back to the Lamppost where they had met.

Lucy returns back through the wardrobe and narrates to her siblings the story, they do not believe Lucy’s story. Later on, Lucy returns to Narnia when she was playing a hide -and -seek game with her siblings. Edmund, Lucy’s elder brother who despised Lucy’s story, enters into the wardrobe to search for Lucy. While searching for her, Edmund meets a lady in the wardrobe who tells him that she is the queen of Narnia. The lady enchants Edmund with supernatural Turkish enjoyment. Then the lady encourages Edmund to bring his other siblings to her and she promises him more Turkish enjoyment and also promises him that he will become a prince and later on the King after she dies.

Lucy then sees Edmund at the lamppost, they both return to the others via the wardrobe. During his conversation with Lucy, Edmund comes to realize that the lady he had just spoken with was the white for sure Jadis – The white witch. Edmund keeps quiet and he does not tell his siblings about his encounter with the white witch. Edmund lies to Susan and Peter while he denies claims by Lucy that he had also entered the Narnia via the wardrobe.

Later on, all the four siblings entered Narnia whilst thrashing in the wardrobe after they met the professor’s housekeeper called Mrs Macready.  Lucy leads her siblings to the cave where Tumnus stayed and they find the cave ransacked, with a note from Jadis’s police concerning his capture for high disloyalty. The four children are then spotted by Beaver, who leads them to his house. Beaver and his wife tell the children about a prophecy that all the powers possessed by the white witch will one day fail if two son and daughters of Eve take the four thrones which are at Cair Paravel. Beaver and his wife tell the children about Aslan who has not been around for several days but is now present again.

Edmund hides and goes back to the white witch’s palace. The palace is full of statues; these statues are the witch’s enemies whom she has changed to stones. When the witch realizes that Edmund is alone, she gets very furious and gets angrier when she learns that Aslan has come back to Narnia. Beaver and his wife realize that Edmund has sneaked to Jadi’s castle; they abandon their home and lead the three children to Aslan. Immediately, snow begins to melt while Jadi’s witchcraft on Narnia begins to fracture. Winter comes to an end; Father Christmas appears and brings for the Beavers and the children presents.

The three children together with the Beavers are welcomed to the camp by Aslan. Peters engages in a short battle and this was his first battle. Susan and Lucy were having fun near the woods at Aslan’s camp. While they were having fun, they were attacked by two wolves. Susan shouted for help with her horn and they were rescued by Peter and Aslan. During the battle, Peter kills Maugrim who is the chef of Jadi’s police; it is a wolf while the other wolf is left by Aslan to go. The wolf is followed by eagles and centaurs from Aslan’s army.  Edmund is also saved by Aslan’s forces when he was about to be killed by the white witch. Aslan’s forces were lead to where Edmund was by the wolf that was set free by Aslan.

Jadis approaches in ceasefire to conference with Aslan. Jadis the white witch insists that she must kill Edmund for treason because she has every right to in accordance with the profound magic from the sunrise of time. Aslan takes Jadis aside and speaks with her in privately persuading her to relinquish her claims. That very evening, Aslan leaves his in camp in secret but Susan and Lucy follow him. Aslan has accepted to die on behalf of Edmund. Aslan is tied to the stone table by Jadis and she Stubbs him with a knife.

Following day, while Susan and Lucy were preparing to leave, they heard the stone where Aslan was slain brake and turning around to see what had happened, Aslan was standing right there before them. Aslan was restored to life again. Aslan tells Susan and Lucy that there is stronger magic that was there before the sunrise of time and that these magic will bring back a person who is killed back to life in place of a betrayer. He tells the two girls that Jadis knew nothing about that magic. Aslan expands by telling them that, the table would break and even death would also start operating backwards.

Conclusion

Aslan then allows Susan and Lucy to traverse on his back as they rush back to Jadis’s castle. At the castle, Jadis breathes upon the statues there, he restores all those who were turned into statues to life. Edmund and Peter then lead Narnia army against the army of Jadis. In the beginning, Jadis is winning but when Aslan arrives at the scene with the resurrected statues as backups. Jadis’s army is routed by the Narnians and Jadis is killed by Aslan.

The four children are then given the names of kings and queens of the Narnia. Peter becomes King Peter the Magnificent, Susan becomes Queen Susan the Gentle, Edmund becomes the just king and Lucy becomes the Valiant queen. The children ruled over Narnia for several years and fifteen years down the line, the four children are looking for a white stag and they come across the lamppost in the jungle. The branches of the lamppost become coats. The children also come across the wardrobe in that was in the house of and they become children again.
