A good leader should have the capability to lead others without fear or intimidation. It is a common occurrence for leaders to be intimidated by those more powerful than them. To be a leader means to do what is supposed to be done, to do the right thing no matter who or what is involved. A good example would be what Mr. Patrick Lumumba is and has been doing as the Head of the Kenya Anti-corruption Commission. He has initiated various investigations into the properties that ministers have and the activities in their various dockets which are corrupt. This is a very good quality in a leader. As John. F. Kennedy said…`… there comes a time when silence amounts to betrayal…` Indeed if our leaders do not speak out on the ills being committed against the people, it will be a betrayal to themselves, the people and the country as a whole.
A good leader is one who does not tolerate corruption. Corruption is a disease that has enslaved the people of Kenya for a very long time. Various people are looked down upon by their leaders and their rights infringed upon with no one to plead their cases for them. This is seen widely in our own justice system where cases are thrown out of court by the judges who are bribed by the accused and thus infringing upon the rights of the citizens. This is a great injustice to the people and makes them lose confidence in the justice system which is very damaging to the reputation of the country. This was witnessed in the 2007 General elections where the results were disputed and because people lacked confidence in the justice system, it culminated in post-election violence and instead of the suspects being tried in our own local tribunals the people opted to have them tried in the International Criminal Court.
A good leader listens to people. A good leader listens to what a person is saying and does not go yelling at them when what they are doing is explaining what they did. A good leader should listen to the ideas given by the workers or people under him as sometimes these people have really good and commendable ideas but most leaders make a mistake of dismissing such ideas and take them to be a waste of their time. A leader should instead take them into account and apply plausible ones. A leader should also listen to various concerns and issues raised by people. Listen to what they want and try and do something to change the situation as this is an indication of the feelings of the workers and how one responds to them will also determine how they will take it and their reaction to it.
Conclusion
A good leader should treat people fairly. Equality is of great importance to the leadership. As such credit for good work done should be given where it is due and should be accorded to the person responsible for doing the work. If another person takes credit for work done it could make other workers not to do their work with the proficiency and efficiency they had before as they would think that they will have taken their time and energy to do the work only for someone else to take credit for it. A good leader should, however, remember that some people will stand out in the crowd for their good and excellent skills in their work. Such people should be appreciated accordingly.
In conclusion, a good leader should incorporate all these qualities in his leadership in order to be successful in what they do.
