Write a critique of the article “Never Say Anything a Kid Can Say!”
Introduction
The article never says anything a kid can say was written by a mathematics teacher who came up with the idea that the teacher in class should never say anything that a pupil or student in his class can say to the other pupils. The article is based on the assumption that one can learn a lot from listening to children. A teacher should not let class work to be based on him simply talking and explaining concepts while the students do all the listening, the teacher can sit at the back and listen to the children as they speak and explain concepts as per how they understand them and make corrections where they necessary.
By using this method the teacher and the students can both learn a lot. Listening to students as they explain the concepts helped Reynolds to realize that what they know and what they do not know, what they understood and what they are yet to understand. This made up to be able to plan what issues to cover extensively and formulate his lesson plan appropriately. As a teacher one should only be there to say what the children cannot say because they do not know them or they are yet to comprehend the concept.
This means that the teacher should apply process rather than product questions, questions that do not only require a simple yes or no reply but one that calls for the student to critique, analyze and interpret the concepts enough to be able to stand before an entire class and make a comprehensive presentation. The teacher is not involved in giving lectures but also involving the class as a form of discussion as well.
As much as the model of listening to the student is ideal in class work it is easier said than done. This is because it requires a lot of time both in planning and in the execution process (Shrum, 2009). It requires complete involvement with the student which proves to be quite a task especially when the teacher has to deal with many classes that have many children. It also requires a complete student corporation so that they can be able to deliver as timely as expected. When students are unable to deliver on time it becomes time wasted as the teacher will have to go back to the active speaking role as opposed to the perceive listening role.
Conclusion
The task of making children have the sole responsibility of being able to understand concepts outside class and sharing it with the rest of the class is not achieved on the first day of class meaning the model will need the teacher to establish a rapport with the students (Shrum, 2009). This can be done by encouraging them in order to boost their esteem, this, however, cannot be planned for in advance as the time it took for one group of students to open up with the teacher will not be the same time it will take another group of students to do the same.
Effective questioning and listening by the student are based on proper and successful execution by the teacher, this will mean that the teacher has to always make all the topics as interesting as possible for the students which are playing a bigger role than the usual, teach and let them find it interesting.
