The Disclosure Movie Summary
Introduction
After watching the movie Disclosure, which originated from the novel written by Michael Crichton, I realized the magnitude behind sexual harassment complaints in our society, especially in the corporate world. This paper examines the representations of males in the corporate workforce, compared to the fictional workplace as portrayed in the movie, where males dominate the company because of superior authority and also how capable top executives can control the lives and decisions of inferior employees.
Discussion
Tom Sanders who faces the improper placement and unfair treatments in his company. In connection with the unfairness he faces in the company, Tom Sanders has to strive for fairness in the company by revealing the truth. In this case, he does not establish the truth only for the corporation but also for the individual’s sake. Sanders, a man who loves his work, who loves his wife and children, would never put them in any sort of jeopardy. After the incident with Meredith, you can see absolute guilt and worry in his eyes.
During his strives, Tom Sanders faces so many difficulties to reveal the truth. For the consequences, he does not avoid his problems, he even struggles against all of his difficulties as hard as he can. One perfect example of how unfair he gets treated is the conversation between Sanders and Phil. “Because if you ask me, Garvin screwed you. You put in the time, you’ve demonstrated you can run the division, and he put in someone else instead. It’s his company.”
Even though Sanders wouldn’t get that position as the vice president of the technical division, the company, however, should’ve considered preserving his current position in consideration of his loyalty to the company and also his superior experiences. Throughout the movie, you can see how Sanders shifted from being moral patiency to moral agency.
When Phil spoke to him about the incident, he innocently defended himself but it was quite obvious that Phil did not even consider his side of the story. “Phil. Listen. I didn’t do it.” “I understand that’s probably how you feel, but-“. Also, you can see the stages of moral patiency in Sanders when his colleagues were actually accusing him of jeopardizing the company’s merger. His closes friend and colleague blatantly embarrassed him in front of his wife at a banquet by revealing the sexual harassment case openly. Sanders immediate response was “who got to you?”
Sanders feels rejected and deserted as well as hopeless in the company. He feels he has no existence anymore in the company and feels that his self-respect is lost. However, Sanders has to face the bitter reality of unfair treatments. After the banquet, Sanders and his wife argued over the case home. He left the argument with a final quote “sexual harassment is about power!” Soon after that, Sanders and his attorney developed new evidence in which turned the case around. This is where Sanders shifted from being moral patiency to moral agency.
He collected more knowledge about the case and power by conducting his own scheming ways. Downloading confidential information from Garvin’s hotel suite and eavesdropping on Phil and Meredith’s conversation. Finally concluding how Garvin and Meredith are going to fire him at the shareholder’s conference. He dug his own information and revealed the truth behind why the company is lacking efficiency. The production line was inefficient not because of Sanders incompetent capability to conduct a productive operation line, it was because Meredith has set up mischievous involvement to trap him in to ruin his career.
Conclusion
Finally, I can conclude that Sanders deserves moral praise not only because he has defended himself successfully, but because he also saved the integrity of the company. His strong moral commitment is he wants to avoid the sexual harassment happened in the company, and also he wants to save the company’s credibility. Sanders’ strong moral commitment gave him courage to not only protest against Phil for mistreatment, protest against Garvin in that short talk with him in the car, and also the courage to display the truth in the conference room of the company that he is the victim of some manipulative schemes, including Meredith’s sexual harassment acquisition. For that much, Sanders definitely deserves moral praise.
