We are all slaves to the system
Introduction
When corruption has become systemic, it can no longer be referred to as corruption. The American System was a program for economic development by Henry Clay. Clay’s idea was that the federal government should implement protective tariffs and internal improvements while a national bank helps develop the nation’s economy. This was the true American dream. After reading Arthur Miller Death of a Salesman, Beloved by Toni Morrison and Somebody Blew up America by Baraka, it is realized that we are all slaves to this flawed system.
Our Economy has collapsed in the early 1900’s; this was driven by the lack of regulations and the people in power of the system not being accountable. This is also known as the great depression. In Arthur Miller’s novel, he shows us how the system is corrupted. No matter how long an individual has been with a company or how hard one has worked, their fate within that company is out of their hands.
Discussion
In the end, we are all worker ants slaving for the queen and like all long as the ones who make the decisions remain wealthy and in power, the working class will forever be expended and replaced. We are told we have the freedom to want ever it is we want to be, but the reality remains that this is all smoke and mirrors. We are all slaves to the system because there is no such thing as freedom, we are all lead astray by ones with power, and taken advantage of and left feeling used.
There’s no such thing as freedom in the U.S.A as we learn from reading Beloved and the death of a salesman. When you think you have obtained freedom in one aspect of life, through another angle this is just the beginning. We see this clearly through Sethe and Willy Loman. Willy Loman all he wanted to do was live the American dream. He lied, cheated his kids through the system so he can be a true America. He will do anything to blend in… He thought he was working towards but all he was really doing was killing himself inside because the system didn’t fit him and he wanted it too.
Same with Sethe in Beloved… Sethe enslaved her kid’s freedom just to find herself being enslaved by the evil and self-haunting images of her killing her kids just so they could be free elsewhere instead of being a slave on the sweet home of 124. After Sethe, though she was giving her daughter beloved freedom by killing her so she could live freely, came back to hurt Sethe in the worst way possible. When schoolteacher realizes that they were no going on his farm he decided to let Sethe and her kids go free because he knows the pain of her being a runaway slave with no family. He knows it will hurt/haunt her soul forever. After a beloved passing, the ghost came back to haunt the family… This happens because Sethe her kids and Paul D all know the effect this had on their family and how it affects Sethe.
Sethe was never the same again after beloved death… The reason why Sethe was never the same was that is all goes back to Sethe and Willy Loman being a Slave to the system and not even knowing that there is a system in tack. Also, Willy Loman and Sethe try to beat the system by trying to take the alternate route. Loman experiment didn’t turn out a plan… His son didn’t want to be the man Willy wanted him to be, also, in the end, the dream that he was chasing ended up chasing and killing William Loman. All he had left for his family was his inurement money. On the other hand, Sethe decided to kill her kids so they didn’t have to live life as a slave. Sethe killing her kids didn’t do but tear her family life apart.
Willy Loman labor that he did for this boss was all false statements. Mr. Loman though that working at the firm for so long that, that he will automatically be in line to get the upgrade. As we all know promotions come with time… With an owner change, nobody job is safe. Willy Loman thought no matter what since he was a grandfather in that nothing can happen to his job. He also helps raise his new boss from when he was little. So while knowing this, Willy thought he was saving himself and beating the system, when really all he was doing was hurting himself and his further in finding a job.
Working at a job with no security is scary, Willy was not fully stable when his old boss was in charge, but he was still living and working in areas that he wanted to but after the changes and his new boss taking over it was none of that. Willy was still a slave to the system because he works all his life without even knowing he was a slave. In Willy’s eyes, he was living the American dream, and just struggling a little. When in reality all he was doing was making the system beat him in many ways by making him work double hours at work because he has two families to feed, his own and all of his Mistress. This is the same problem Sethe had. She was taught fear in so many ways; she was also taught mistrust.
She was taught fear when she kills her daughter “beloved”. After the aftermath of the killing, the school teacher didn’t want the kids. He told him that they were all no used to him or his farm at Sweet home 124. This hurt Sethe because she thought she was killing them for their freedom in her eyes. After the school teacher saw what had happened he decided to kill Sethe soul. He wanted her to suffer the pain and guilt of Sethe losing him money. He wanted her to live with the fear of her killing her kids and not him. He wants her conscious to play games with her.
Conclusion
School teacher wanted the beloved ghost to haunt her like it ended up doing that’s why he didn’t take the kids after Sethe decided to start killing them. Willy Loman and Sethe had the same problem but just from a different time in life… Willy story takes place doing the great depression, after WW1 when our country was trying to get back on its feet and Willy was still a slave; Mr. Loman was a slave by not even knowing. Sethe on the other had been a slave, she knew it and everybody on at sweet home knows that. So Sethe way of not showing it or having some power was to kill her kids so she can have some type of power and beat the system.
